2023 Camp Courses

GenCyber at CSUSB contains curriculum and courses designed and led by CSUSB cyber program students. Each course is related to cybersecurity work roles defined by the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and integrated with the NSA GenCyber Cybersecurity Concepts of Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Think Like an Adversary, Keep it Simple, and Defense in Depth.

Raspberry Pi Intro (Camp Introduction)

Instructors: Melani M., Christian M., Jaylon I., Friday K., Alberto Y.

Distribution of raspberry pi models, explanation of network setup and use of the devices for camp course work, team competition, and activities.

Cybersecurity Analyst [CA]

Instructor: Melani Martin

The lesson on Cybersecurity Analyst will give an overview of cyber career paths.  Various types of cyber threats and attacks will be discussed from malware to social engineering.  Best practices in terms of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) will be highlighted.  Incident response and recovery plans will be discussed.  A dive into risk assessment will be performed through a role playing exercise as well as having raspberry pi hands-on activity.

Network Operations Specialist [NOS]

Instructor: Alberto Yerena

The Network Operations Specialist Course will focus on beginner to intermediate networking fundamentals, implementation, and operations. Students will be introduced to networking concepts and hardware and instructed on practical use cases of the concepts being taught.

Vulnerability Assessment Analyst [VA]

Instructor: Friday Kriedeman

The Vulnerability Assessment course encourages students to explore ethical hacking. This course will go over penetration testing methodologies, and tooling such as NMap and Metasploit. The course will cover concepts such as footprinting, exploitation, post-exploitation, and reconnaissance. It will provide an overview of beginner concepts, and a basic understanding of advanced concepts. The course relates directly to the job role of ‘Ethical Hacker’ and ‘Penetration Tester’.

Cyber Defense Forensics Analyst [CDFA]

Instructor: Jaylon Ignacio

The Cyber Defense Forensics Analyst course explores the concepts of steganography and use of popular forensics tools such as Autopsy or FTK (Forensic Toolkit). Students will discover the art of concealing information within digital files and the significance of analyzing hidden data for investigative purposes. This course discusses the fundamentals of steganography techniques, including various methods of embedding data and detecting hidden information. Additionally, students will gain hands-on experience with forensic tools, and uncovering their capabilities in retrieving, analyzing, and presenting digital evidence.

Cyber Defense Incident Responder [CDIR]

Instructor: Christian Magana

The Cyber Defense Incident Responder course highlights the fundamentals of the incident responder’s role. Students will delve into the basics of incident response and practice skills such as log analysis and Linux-based terminal command use. The course focuses on the methodology of Identify, Analyze, and Respond through the use of hands-on activities via Raspberry Pi devices.

GenCyber CyberPi Clash

The CyberPi Clash ends the week-long camp with an adventurous competition of newly-trained minds with the objective of employing the GenCyber concepts and skills gained from the camp work role courses as students prove their ability to secure isolated networks and implement best practices for systems security.
